WATCH: David Warner furiously walks off after DRS call

Australia opener David Warner was left fuming following a decision review system (DRS) during run-chase against Sri Lanka in World Cup 2023 clash at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Monday.

Chasing a modest target of 210, Australia started rapidly, scoring 15 runs in the first over of their innings. David Warner looked in particularly punishing mode as he smashed a four and a six off Lahiru Kumara in the very first over.

At the end of three overs, Australia were 24-0. However, the blistering start was halted by left-arm seamer Dilshan Madushanka.

On the first ball of the fourth over of the innings, the left-handed batter missed a pull-shot against Sri Lanka’s Dilshan Madushanka and got hit under the knee-roll near the line of the leg-stump.

He immediately gestured to his right to umpire Joel Wilson, saying that it was going down the leg. However, the umpire took his time but raised his finger.

David Warner was quick to go up in review and seemed confident that the decision would be overturned. The ball tracking, however, showed that the delivery would have clipped the leg stump, meaning it was ‘Umpire’s call’ on review.

Wilson’s decision was upheld and David Warner was consequently given out. Following the DRS call, he thumped his bat on his pad in anger while shouting before stomping off the pitch.

On the final delivery of the same over, Madushanka dismissed Steve Smith as well, bringing the ball back in to him and trapping him in front to give Sri Lanka their second wicket of the innings.

As far as the match is concerned, Australia thrashed Sri Lanka to register their first win in the World Cup 2023 at Ekana Cricket Stadium Lucknow.

With their backs to the wall after defeats by India and South Africa, Australia showed some urgency with the ball and bundled out Sri Lanka for 209 inside 44 overs with Adam Zampa leading the rout on figures of 4-47.

After strong winds delayed the start of their chase, Australia made heavy weather of a small target and slumped to 24-2.

Half-centuries by Mitchell Marsh (52) and Josh Inglis (58) put their chase back on track and Glenn Maxwell produced a breezy cameo of 31 not out to see them home with nearly 15 overs to spare.

Australia’s first win of the tournament lifted them from the bottom of the 10-team table to eighth place, above 1996 champions Sri Lanka, who remain winless after three matches.
