KARACHI: The issue of restoring the policing powers to the Pakistan Rangers is likely to be resolved as Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has convened a Sindh cabinet meeting on Saturday.
The provincial cabinet has been convened at the Chief Minister House and will likely discuss a range of issues.
More importantly, the cabinet will discuss whether to grant policing power to the paramilitary on the Punjab model, which provides limited powers to assist security agencies, and whether to grant separate powers for Karachi and the rest of Sindh.
Law Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar will give a detailed briefing on the legal aspects of the issue to the cabinet chaired by Chief Minister of Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah.
The policing powers of the Rangers expired on April 15, a week ago, and have not been extended or restored so far. This has created a new rift between the Sindh and federal government
This is further worsened by other issues including provision of gas and electricity to the province. Sindh chief minister recently threatened to cut off gas supply to the rest of the country, and fight for the rights of the province.
Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar has slammed the delay in Rangers policing powers calling it a deliberate attempt by the Sindh government to politicise and use the matter as bargaining chip with the federal government and blackmailing the paramilitary agency.
