Humayun Akhtar Khan was born on April 1, 1955 to a family of an army officer. His father General Akhtar Abdur Rehman served as the Chairman of the Pakistani Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Director General of the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) in the 1980s.
He got his primary education from Army Burn Hall College, Abbottabad and secondary education from Saint Mary’s Academy, Rawalpindi. He holds a bachelors degree in science from Government College, Lahore and a master’s degree in Actuarial Science and Business Administration from University of Canada.
After his father’s sudden demise in a plane crash that also killed former military ruler General Zia ul Haq and his top leadership on August 17, 1988, Humayun decided to return to Pakistan and enter politics. His three brothers followed suit and started businesses in Pakistan.
Humayun joined the fray of electoral politics in 1990 on the platform of the Islami Jamhoor Ittehad (IJI). He was given a ticket to contest from NA-92 Lahore, a constituency that had traditionally been a PPP stronghold. He won the election by margin of approximately 14000 votes against PPP’s Rafiq Ahmed Sheikh.
He became part of the PML-N under the leadership of Nawaz Sharif after it broke away from the IJI. In 1993 elections, Humayun contested election from NA-93 against PPP stalward Aitzaz Ahsan and defeated him in the constituency that was once known as the Larkana of Lahore for the PPP.
Humayun along with many of close aides of Nawaz Sharif was put under house arrest for months. Corruption charges were levelled against him and a ban on his travelling abroad was imposed. After exoneration from all charges, he resumed his political career in 2001.
He contested election from NA-125 constituency on the ticket of PML-Q and defeated the PML-N and PPP candidate. He then was sworn in as the Commerce Minister in the cabinet of the then Prime Minister Zafarullah Khan Jamali.

He contested from the NA-125 and NA-124 constituencies but lost both seats to rival candidates with his party suffering a heavy defeat.
Before 2013 elections, the PML-N and PML-Likeminded – a breakaway faction of the PML-Q – reached an agreement on seat-to-seat adjustment, under which Humayun was to be awarded a PML-N ticket to contest the elections, but didn’t receive promised ticket.
The PML-N government, however, accommodated his brother Haroon Akhtar by appointing him as special assistant to the Prime Minister on Revenue.
