Ahsan in the last tenure of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz served as the Minister for Interior; and Minister for Planning, Development and Reforms overviewing strategic China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (C-PEC).

Ahsan Iqbal, was born on 28th September, 1958 in Lahore into a politically active family. His mother, Apa Nisar Fatima, was a Member of the National Assembly (1985–1988) and the daughter of Chaudhry Abdul Rehman Khan, a Member of the Legislative Assembly from Jalandhar, Punjab in British India, before the independence of Pakistan.

Iqbal received his early education from Cantt Public School, Karachi after which he joined PAF Public School, Sargodha. He then became a student at Government College Lahore. After completing his degree from University of Engineering and technology (UET) Lahore, he applied to Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania for further studies. He has also attended School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University, USA and Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University USA.

Ahsan Iqbal started politics as president of the student union of University of Engineering and Technology. He was then associated with Islami Jamiat Tulaba, student wing of the right wing Jamat-i-Islami.

He later joined Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz. He was elected as a member of the National Assembly in 1993 general elections of Pakistan from Narowal in Punjab. He was re-elected as the member of the National Assembly for the second time in 1997 general election, when his party PML-N won majority in National Assembly. He was appointed as the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission of Pakistan with the title of Minister of State, chairman Pakistan Engineering Council and was also a chairman for the National Steering Committees on Information Technology and IQM and Productivity. Iqbal continued on the positions allotted to him till the 1999 military takeover in which then Army Chief, Pervez Musharraf overthrew Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif led government.

In general election, 2002, he lost the National Assembly seat. During the Musharraf rule, Iqbal taught Management at the Mohammad Ali Jinnah University in Islamabad from 2000 to 2007.Iqbal is considered a loyalist of Nawaz Sharif.

On 18th Feb 2008 he won the elections for the National Assembly seat from NA-117 Narowal-III.

He was elected as an MNA from his constituency NA-117 (Narowal-III) for the fourth time in the May 2013 elections. He served as a Federal Minister for Education in the coalition government of PPP, PML-N, ANP and JUI-F formed after 2008 elections, but later resigned when his party pulled out of the coalition on 12 May 2008.

His appointments include Chief Coordinator / Minister of State, Pakistan 2010 Program (1997–99), Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission (Pakistan) (1998–99); Chairman, Good Governance Group, Government of Pakistan (1997–99); Chairman, Pakistan Engineering Board, and Chairman, National Steering Committees on Information Technology and TQM and Productivity (1998–99).

He earlier served as Policy and Public Affairs Assistant to the Prime Minister of Pakistan (1993). He served as Senior Advisor, Al-Madinah Al-Monawarah Digital Economy Project of the Madina Government, Saudi Arabia from September 2004 to April 2006.

Two months before elections, terrorists launched an assassination attempt on Iqbal during a party’s rally in Narowal. He suffered a bullet wounds, but he survived.
