Akhtar Mengal, who heads his own faction of the Balochistan National Party (BNP-M), was born on October 06, 1962. He advocates equal rights for Balochistan through peaceful and democratic struggle.
In 1997, he was elected as Chief Minister of Balochistan and remained in the office until June 15, 1998.
Mr. Mengal was sent behind bars in September 2006, along with a large number of workers in Balochistan for planning a long march against then military ruler Pervez Musharraf. Mengal was released on May 09, 2008 and all charges against him were dropped.
He went into self-imposed exile in Dubai and returned on March 2013 after four years to take part in the general elections.
After spending over a decade away from parliamentary politics, Mengal returned to the Balochistan Assembly as a member of the house after winning a seat in PB-35 Khuzdar-III
The Mengal-led BNP could only beg two seats in the 51-member house Balochistan Assembly while two of its candidates won the national assembly seats in the elections that the party alleged were massively rigged.
