Indian city adopts innovative way to protect commuters from heatwave

The authorities have installed temporary protective shades (tarpaulin covers) at traffic signals to let motorists and commuters evade intense heat.

The move is seen as a certain reprieve for citizens who brave searing sun on daily basis. Nagpur temperature has been around 40 centigrade for last 30 days, prompting an extraordinary move.

The installation of shades, on the other side, also ensure that motorists will abide by traffic rules, as most of the times people rush to break the signal due to heatwave.

India’s hottest months are May and June, but some states have already registered temperatures in excess of 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), forcing authorities to take emergency steps.

Pakistan, which suffered its hottest spell in decades in 2015, plans to open 500 response centers to provide shelter and cold water to people if a heat-wave warning is issued.

It’s pertinent to mention here that at least three people have died due to heatstroke in Karachi in last 25 days.
