President Mamnoon says foreign intervention main cause of terrorism

ISLAMABAD: President Mamnoon Hussain said on Sunday the main cause of terrorism is foreign intervention, and that counter-terrorism measures taken by Pakistan have broken the backbone of terrorists in the country.

Addressing the first six-nation Speakers’ Conference here today, the president said Pakistan was playing its role for the development and prosperity of the region.

He expressed hope that terrorism will soon be completely eliminated from the country. Hussain told the participants that terrorism was a global phenomenon, thus it warranted a concerted global strategy to defeat it.

Highlighting importance of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, he said it has infused a new spirit into the region. The project won’t take too long to see the light of the day, he assured while inviting all states of the region to join the fate changer project.

The president said One Belt One Road and CPEC would bring markets of West China, South and Central Asia, Africa and Europe together. He said a network of land routes, railways, sea lanes and Optic Highways would lead to increased and intensified interaction between different countries and regions.

He stressed that peace in Afghanistan was linked to peace in the entire region. Terrorists have wracked havoc on regional countries, he added. Pakistan has rendered tremendous sacrifices in war on terror, he told the gathering.

He said the dream of strong economic cooperation was intrinsically linked to regional peace and peaceful co-existence. He said it was with this spirit that Pakistan has extended sincere and unconditional cooperation for peace and stability in Afghanistan.

President Mamnoon Hussain said terrorism has affected many countries of the world but Pakistan is its biggest victim. He said foreign powers are involved fanning terrorism in Pakistan.

Referring to Kashmir dispute, the president said the danger of war in the region can be mitigated by resolving the Kashmir issue as per resolution of the United Nations.
