LAHORE: The funeral prayers of former first lady Kulsoom Nawaz will be offered on Friday, September 14, at the Sharif Medical City in Jati Umrah, announced the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz spokesperson.

PML-N leader Marriyum Aurangzeb informed the media that congregational prayers (Rasm-e-Qul) for the forgiveness of the deceased will be offered on September 16 (Sunday) between Asr and Maghrib.

The government has released former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter from prison for three days to attend funeral services for his wife, Kulsoom, who died of cancer the day before in London.  The body is due to be flown back from London on Thursday.

According to reports, three rooms inside Jati Umra residence of Sharifs have been declared a sub-jail.

Supporters of Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif mourn the death of his wife, Kulsoom Nawaz, in Lahore.

The Punjab government today decided to extend their parole for three days, citing a spokesperson for the provincial Home Department. “The extension will be in effect from midnight and will expire on Saturday night.”

Ousted as prime minister last year by the Supreme Court over some undeclared income, Nawaz Sharif was in London with Kulsoom this year when a anti-graft court handed him a 10-year jail term in absentia over the ownership of luxury flats in London in the 1990s.

Maryam Sharif, his daughter and presumed political heir, was sentenced to seven years in prison on related charges.

The father and daughter left Kulsoom’s bedside to return to Pakistan to rally their followers ahead of a July 25 general election. Both were arrested on arrival and have been imprisoned since.

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday also extended condolences to the Sharif family.

Kulsoom Nawaz breathed her last at a hospital in London after a prolonged illness. The political career of the former first lady remains far from any controversy, unlike embroilment of her family members in different cases.

Born into a Kashmiri family in Lahore, she attended Islamia College and Foreman Christian College University for her graduation. Kulsoom was married to Nawaz Sharif, with whom she has four children. Kulsoom Nawaz served as the President of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) from 1999 to 2002.
