NEW ORLEANS: Passengers at a cruise ship had a terrifying moment when it suddenly flooded with water in scenes reminiscent of the Titanic.
Pictures and videos showed water streaming into corridors on board the Carnival Dream cruise liner in the Caribbean as 50 rooms were flooded.
The flooding happened when the ship’s fire extinguishing system was breached, leaving many to be relocated to the boat’s on-board spa to sleep on yoga mats.
A user posted photos and videos on Facebook when she had a ‘rare moment of internet connection’. Making comparisons to the Titanic movie, she told followers: ‘We are flooding on a cruise, we heard the violins and the silverware all came crashing down. ‘What in the world… say a prayer for is all (sic).’
One of her followers said: ‘I literally thought this was a scene from Titanic.’ Images from the ship showed staff trying to clean up the mess with buckets.
Carnival Cruises said passengers affected would get full refunds, a 50 per cent credit for a future cruise, and could be flown home before the end of the cruise.
A spokesman said: ‘Our onboard teams began cleanup immediately related to this clean water from a fire suppression system. ‘We appreciate our guests’ understanding and sincerely apologise. We also thank our crew members for their quick action and hard work.’
