KARACHI: Police on Sunday arrested social campaigner Alamgir Khan along with several activists for staging a protest outside Karachi Press Club (KPC), ARY New reported.
Alamgir Khan, known for the ‘Fix It’ campaign, had organised the protest to demand immediate reinstatement of Allah Dino Khawaja as Inspector General (IG) Sindh who had been removed from his position.
The situation worsened as the protesters attempted to enter the ‘red zone’ to protest in front of the Chief Minister House. Police stopped the protesters leading to a clash forcing police to resort to use of water cannon and tear gas to disperse the protesters.
While talking to media, Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) South Saqib Memon confirmed that Alamgir Khan had been arrested along with other activists for taking the law in their hand.
He said that Alamgir had the democratic right to protest. However, permission cannot be granted to hold the protest outside the CM House due to the law and order situation as Section 144 was imposed in the area.
Memon said that Alamgir was offered to hold the protest at office of DIG South but he refused to oblige. Therefore, he was arrested and a case will be lodged against him.
AD Khawaja has been removed as IGP on Friday and was replaced by Sardar Abdul Majeed Dasti.
