NEW YORK: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will award Dag Hammarskjold Medal at a ceremony in New York to 119 military, police and civilian peacekeepers, including a Pakistani.

The awards will be given to recognize the sacrifices of people who lost their lives in the year 2018 and early 2019.

The ceremony is being held to mark the annual International Day of Peacekeepers on Friday.

Among the fallen peacekeepers to be honoured is Pakistan’s Naik Muhammad Naeem Raza, who served with the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO).

Pakistan’s permanent Ambassador to the UN Maleeha Lodhi said on her Twitter account: “Naik Muhammad Naeem Raza from Pakistan who embraced shahadat [martyrdom] in Democratic Republic of Congo will be recognised & his courage & memory [will be] honored.”
