SEHWAN: Alam Channa, who made it to the Guinness Book of World Records for being the tallest of man of the world between 1982 and 1992, is being remembered today on his 19th death anniversary.
Born in Bachal Channa village of the Sehwan town of the Sindh province. Alam spent most of his years in his native town. He did not acquire any noteworthy education.
He stood 6ft 4 inches by the time he was 18. He continued to grow taller till he was 26. He was 7ft 8 inches when his name was registered in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Alam would wear sixteen-meter long traditional Shalwar Qameez and a footwear prepared to fit his size, which put extra burden on already strained resources of the family. He would work at the famous shrine of Sufi saint Lal Shahbaz Qalandar in Shewan to make a good living.
His family had to get him a charpai large enough to accommodate his tallest body. He used to be the center of attention for his unusual height.
Channa died on July 2, 1998 after protracted illness in New York City. He is buried in Sehwan.
