LAHORE: Reacting to criticism over his “silence” over four year old girl Asma’s rape and murder in Mardan, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan on Wednesday said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) police not only recovered the girl’s body within 24 hours but is taking all measures to provide justice to the victim’s family, ARY News reported.

Speaking during the All Parties Protest against 2014 Model Town massacre, Imran Khan said that on 13 January, Asma’s parents approached police and registered their complaint after which police recovered the girl’s body within 24 hours.

“On January 15, a committee comprising civil society activists and opposition parties was formed and now police is apprising them on every single detail of the inquiry,” said Imran Khan.

He maintained that one cannot draw a parallel between Zainab and Asma’s case as the Kasur rape-slay victim was the 12th such girl in the Punjab district within months and this was not all as in 2015, the horrific child abuse case too shook Pakistan but justice wasn’t delivered.

Pakistan People’s Party leader Aitzaz Ahsan, during his speech, had urged Imran Khan to speak for Asma like he did for Kasur’s Zainab and make sure justice is delivered in the Mardan girl’s case as Imran Khan-led PTI rules the province.

Asma’s brutal rape and murder

As the country is still reeling over brutal rape and murder of little girl Zainab in Kasur, another horrific case came to light, again of an underage girl from Mardan who was sexually assaulted by an unidentified culprit before being murdered.

Four-year-old Asma was murdered in Jandarpar Gujjar Garhi area of Mardan. The girl was playing outside her home when she went missing and later her body with torture-marks was found from the fields.

Police on Tuesday had raided a house in Asma’s neighborhood and arrested over 70 people who have been imprisoned in different jails. Some of them were later released after interrogation.

The law enforcers are also looking for persons who spotted Asma’s body in the fields and informed her family.

Political opponents had criticised Imran Khan for staying silent over the case while demanding justice for Zainab, the seven-year 0ld girl whose brutal rape and murder shocked whole Pakistan this month.
