Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique, a close aide of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, was elected from the NA-125 constituency of Lahore in general elections in 2013.
The election tribunal’s decision being deemed as a setback for ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has summoned the consultative meeting over the election tribunal’s decision. The members of the central executive committee (CEC) of the ruling PML-N and senior lawyers have been invited in the meeting for consultation.
The prime minister has summoned Khawaja Saad Rafique, who has been presently in Lahore, to attend the meeting at Prime Minister House in Islamabad.
The meeting will look into the pros and cons of an appeal against the verdict of the election tribunal in the Supreme Court.
An election tribunal on Monday declared the results of NA-125 election null and void. The judgment rendered Khawaja Saad Rafique unseated from National Assembly. Saad Rafique had won the election by bagging 123,094 votes. PTI’s Hamid Khan who had secured 83,190 votes in the election had challenged the result in the election tribunal.
