DAVOS: Former army chief General (retd) Raheel Sharif on Monday said that in order to combat terrorism in this age, international community should sit and develop a counter-narrative to fight terrorists’ propaganda.

Speaking during the panel discussion titled “Terrorism in the Digital Age” at the 47th World Economic Forum in Davos, the former army chief said that states dealing with terrorism should provide a counter narrative to youth in order to save themselves from being radicalised by terrorists’ propaganda.

“The same vehicle which they (terrorists) are using, I personally feel, we should be using it better than them,” said Raheel Sharif.

Answering a question about how Pakistan deals with sympathisers of terrorists, the former COAS maintained that when we (Pakistan Army) started Operation Zarb-i-Azb, we decided that we will establish writ of state in all the areas so now writ of the government exists in all of Pakistan as the border (Pak-Afghan) is being managed.

He, however, added that a lot depends on the situation in Afghanistan and peace in the region is linked with stability in Afghanistan.

Raheel Sharif, who started and led Operation Zarb-e-Azb in the country, retired from his post on November 29, 2016, and handed over the command of Pakistan army to Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa.
