ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Tuesday approved a resolution seeking construction of dams in the country.
PTI MNA Ali Muhammad Khan tabled the resolution with regard to the construction of dams during the NA session which was chaired by Speaker Asad Qaiser here.
The lower house of parliament adopted the resolution unanimously amidst criticism from the opposition benches.
Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry said that opposition of building water reservoirs is beyond comprehension. He said the opposition parties are doing politics over the issue.
In his speech, PML-N stalwart Khawaja Asif maintained that the opposition has no qualms over building new water reservoirs but instead of touching the controversial issue of Kalabagh dam, the government should implement the National Water Policy.
“It (NWP) is a historical document, a sacrosanct document as it was approved unanimously by representatives of all four provinces,” said Asif.
Responding to the criticism, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said no one has raised the issue of controversial Kalabagh dam. The opposition has been deliberately fueling an unnecessary debate on the dam, he added.
He said the entire nation is united and has taken it upon itself to build water reservoirs to tackle water crisis.
