ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday issued a notice to the government to appoint Mirza Saleem Baig as chairman of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) within two days.
Chief Justice Saqib Nisar took up the hearing of a case pertaining to the appointment of chairman PEMRA on Wednesday. During the course of hearing, anchors of private media outlets raised objection that Saleem Baig does not meet the requirement of the qualification for the top post.
The apex court had constituted a committee to propose a name for the vacant position of the regulatory authority head .
In a response to anchors’ objections, the Chief Justice remarked “We formed a committee to make the best pick for the vacated position and if it has come up with the name of Saleem Baig then we have no doubts on the committee’s choice.”
The top judge stressed that the court wholly trusts the eligibility of committee’s members to make a deserving selection for the post.
Chief Justice ordered the attorney general to ensure that the notification of Saleem Baig’s appointment as Chairman PEMRA should be issued within two days.
Hameed Haroon, a member of the committee informed the court that the committee interviewed 60 aspirants out of which only 20 candidates were shortlisted.
