The ban was imposed by provincial home department under Section 144 of the criminal procedure code from Jan 20 to 22.

Additional Inspector General of Police Ghulam Qadir Thebo had recommended the Sindh government to ban pillion riding for three days in lieu with the attacks on anti-polio campaigners in sensitive areas of Karachi.

A police officer escorting a polio team in Orangi Town area was attacked by unknown gunmen on 19th January.

Pillion riding ban has become a norm in Sindh’s capital city on all occasions of religious and national importance due to the fragile security situation.
