ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry on Tuesday slammed the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf-led Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government over its decision to celebrate Eidul Fitr today.
“It was not possible for the moon to be sighted last night. The basis of a religious festival has been laid on a lie,” he said in a statement.
“The KP government’s decision to celebrate Eid today is uncalled for and has become a source of embarrassment [for the government],” the minister said, adding that the decision created an impression that a lie enjoys the government patronage.
He said the government doesn’t become party to sectarian or local disagreements. He said it is up to the people to celebrate Eid whenever they want but it should not be based on a lie.
Mr Chaudhry said backward thinking will have to be done away with and expressed the hope that the country’s well-informed stratum will not stay quite over every issue. Societies proceed with a new thinking, he added.

He stressed the need for some retrospection, saying they need to look at where the countries that attained independence with Pakistan stand as of now.
The minister hoped that the controversy surrounding the moon sighting would be resolved.
