Sharmeen, whose latest documentary A girl in the river: The Price of Forgiveness has been nominated for the 88th Academy Awards, met Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at the Prime Minister House today. During their meeting, naturally the topic of honour killing came up and Nawaz assured her of his full support to end the practice in Pakistan.
“Customs and practices like honour killings have nothing to do with us,” said Nawaz Sharif.
PM Nawaz also said that he believed in empowering women.
“Women are the most essential part of our society and I believe in their empowerment, protection and emancipation of achieving the shared goal a prosperous and vibrant Pakistan.”
Nawaz wished her luck ahead of the 88th Academy Awards scheduled to take place o February 28. After the meeting had concluded, Nawaz announced that premiere of the movie A girl in the river: The Price of Forgiveness would be held at the Prime Minister’s Office on February 22nd.
Sharmeen Obaid said she was proud of Prime Minister Nawaz and is sincere promises to tackle the issue of honour killing in Pakistan. “I am proud that Pakistan has a prime minister who has taken a leading role to address the issue of honour killings in the country,” she said.
