ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s son Hussain Nawaz on Tuesday appeared for almost six hours before the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) of the Panama Papers probe, ARY News reported.
Speaking to media after his appearance, Hussain Nawaz said that he had answered all the questions asked by the JIT. He said that he will submit any documents when asked by them.
The PM’s son said that he appeared as they JIT was formed after a legal process, and he has presented for accountability and was answering all relevant questions.
He said they have respect for the law, and will reappear before the JIT when asked to do so. However, he said that he would seek help from the Supreme Court if he feels any bias or prejudice against him.
Hussain Nawaz was issued notice to appear at JIT office on 11:00am at Federal Judicial Academy, Sector 8/4 in Islamabad. A large number of Muslim League-Nawaz leaders were also present outside the judicial academy premises.
The Prime Minister’s son was also told to bring all relevant record and documents as he was told in an earlier notice on May 25. The Joint Investigation Team is probing the allegations against the PM and his family in the Panama Papers.
National Bank’s President Saeed Ahmed also appeared before the JIT to record his statement.
The JIT, headed by Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) additional director general Wajid Zia, will question the PM’s son with regard to the ownership of offshore properties.
He is expected to submit comprehensive replies to the questionnaire given to him by the JIT members along with documents including bank statements and the record of Nelson and Nescol companies owned by the Sharif family.
A day before the Supreme Court had dismissed the petition of the PM’s son in which he had expressed reservations on two of the JIT members and sought to replace them to ensure propriety in the investigation process.
The bench during the court proceedings, ruled that no JIT member could be excluded or replaced on basis of mere suspicion while directing the investigation team to complete the probe within the prescribed time frame in line with the Panamagate case verdict.
The JIT had earlier found the replies of Hussain Nawaz unsatisfactory and asked him to come up with more comprehensive replies. Sources said dazed Hussain kept on changing his stance when questions regarding the ownership of the London flats and money trail behind them were raised by the JIT.
Thus, the JIT gave him a questionnaire about the properties in question and asked him to turn up along with comprehensive replies on May 30.
