Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy had received adulation and praises for her latest Oscar win for the documentary A Girl In The River: The Price Of Forgiveness. However, there were some quarters within Pakistan who were not entirely happy with the film and criticised the filmmaker for highlighting a menace for Pakistan on the international stage. Syed Noor apparently is also one of Sharmeen’s critics but for a different reason; the Lollywood director accused Chinoy of copying the idea and name of his own movie.
According to the Choorian director, Sharmeen not only stole the script of his movie Price of Honour but also the name. He said he would not pursue the matter legally against Chinoy but stated that he was saddened by the fact that he had not been accredited.
Moammar Rana also spoke on the issue and criticised Chinoy for bringing a bad name to Pakistan and challenged her to make a documentary on the afflictions of victims of drone attacks.
Syed Noor’s Price of Honour centers around a poor girl from a backward, conservative background who stood up against the status quo for her rights and education. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s movie was based on an 18 year-old girl who survived an attempt on her life because of honour killing.
