ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Dr Asim Hussain on Wednesday approached the Supreme Court seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against the federal authorities for failing to remove his name from the Exit Control List (ECL).

Dr Asim has taken interior secretary and additional secretary to the court for flouting its order that directed them to remove his name from the no-fly list.

In his plea, he stated that the authorities have not removed his name from the ECL, which is flagrant violation of the apex court’s order. He was to leave for London on Nov 21 for medical treatment, but he couldn’t owing to travel restrictions, he complained.

The PPP leader, thus, pleaded with the judges to initiate contempt proceedings against the above-mentioned ‘contemnors’.

On Nov 16, the apex court granted Dr Asim permission to travel abroad on the medical grounds. It directed the authorities concerned to remove his name from the ECL.

The petitioner’s counsel had contended that his client was unwell and wanted to fly abroad for treatment. He was supposed to leave the country on Nov 9, however, his flight had been pushed ahead to Nov 21 due to his name on the ECL.

He requested the court to grant Dr Asim permission to travel abroad for medical treatment.

Justice Qazi Faez Isa remarked that all people facing cases should be treated equally. He said the suspects booked in various heinous crimes including treason charges were out of the country and roaming freely.
